A soft technology to improve survival and reproductive performance of Litopenaeus stylirostris by counterbalancing physiological disturbances associated with handling stress ArchiMer
Wabete, Nelly; Chim, Liet; Pham, Dominique; Lemaire, Pierrette; Massabuau, J.
The consequences of handling stress (fishing, transfer, eyestalk ablation) on shrimp broodstock are poorly documented. The weakness of farmed shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, during winter is a major problem in New Caledonia, because of seasonal climate (tropical-sub-temperate). The transfer of broodstock in winter from earthen outdoor ponds to indoor maturation tanks in the hatchery (T=20 degrees C, Salinity=35 parts per thousand, fed shrimp) usually leads, after 48 h, to high mortality (up to 70%). Eyestalk ablation to induce ovarian maturation in females leads to further mortality. Starting from a background analysis of physiological disturbances (initial osmoregulatory imbalance) associated with handling stress (Wabete, N., Chim, L., Lernaire, P.,...

Effect of food conditioning on gonadic activity in the oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Hui, Belinda; Vonau, Vincent; Levy, Peva; Cochard, Jean-claude.
Preliminary experiments allowed defining basic requirements of Pinctada margaritifera for somatic and gonadic growth in controlled conditions. This study was continued by observation of the gametogenesis at a cellular level. In April/May 2008, 125 oysters were conditioned for 30 days in 25 tubular tanks (30 L). Water was renewed 4 times/hour. A mixed (v:v) diet of Isochrysis galbana (T-Iso) and Chaetoceros gracilis was supplied continuously. A control batch of 125 oysters was maintained in trays in the lagoon. An initial sample of 30 individuals was made. Gonadic changes were first characterized using a gonadal development index (GDI) based on the ratio of the gonad area to the total visceral mass area on a sagittal section of the body. Histological...

Embryo and larval development of the yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Reeve, 1854) (Mesodesmatidae) in laboratory Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,JUAN J.S.; BERNARDES,JULIANA P.; RAMÍREZ,JUAN R.B.; RAMOS,CÁSSIO O.; GOMES,CARLOS HENRIQUE A. DE MIRANDA; ROMANO,LUIS ALBERTO.
Abstract The yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Reeve, 1854) is a sand mollusc with historical and socioeconomic importance in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. A guaranteed form to access a successful reestablishment of the species in their natural environment is directly linked to their reproduction biology. Then, our report introduces the embryonic and larval development of the yellow clam reared in laboratory for such purposes. M. mactroides broodstock were selected as specimens who possess a mean total shell length and weight of 66 ± 3.82 mm and 27.15 ± 4.07 g for an afterwards spawn induction through stripping technique. Regarding the embryonic development, newly fertilized oocytes exhibited a mean diameter of 51.20 ± 6.64 μm. The first polar corpuscle,...

Floc contribution on spawning performance of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris ArchiMer
Emerenciano, Mauricio; Cuzon, Gerard; Goguenheim, Jean; Gaxiola, Gabriela.
The floc system has been successfully applied for shrimp grow-out, but little is known about floc contribution on reproductive performance. In a 30-day trial, spawning performance of broodstock was evaluated in floc and earthen ponds. Floc spawners achieved better results (P < 0.05) compared with pond spawners in terms of number of spawns per ablated female (2.9 vs. 1.3), spawns per spawning female (3.6 vs. 2.4) and number of consecutive maturation (average of 3.6 times compared with 2.5 times in ponds females). Latency period was lower for floc spawners (7.4 days) than pond spawners (10.7 days) (P < 0.05). The percentage of females that spawned at least once were higher in floc (77.1%) when compared with pond spawners (53.8%) (P < 0.05). Number...

Restriction site heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial DNA of Brycon opalinus (Cuvier, 1819) (Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconiae) BJMBR
Hilsdorf,A.W.S.; Krieger,J.E..
Homoplasmy is a feature usually found in the mtDNA of higher animal taxa. On the other hand, the presence of two classes of mtDNA in the same cell or organism is rare and may appear in length or site variation. Data from mtDNA RFLP analysis of Brycon opalinus populations (Cuvier, 1819; Characiformes, Characidae, Bryconinae) revealed site heteroplasmy from endonuclease NheI digestion. Southern blotting hybridization was used to survey a total of 257 specimens with 24 restriction enzymes. Three different restriction fragment patterns of mtDNA were obtained from NheI digestion. Two individuals from hatchery broodstock were found to have two of them. NheI digests of heteroplasmic individuals yielded two fragments of approximately 1180 and 1260 bp. Despite the...

Selênio orgânico na alimentação de matrizes de tilápia-do-Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) - DOI: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v31i4.6300 Animal Sciences
Pereira, Thiago Scremin; UNESP; Fabregat, Thiago El Hadi Perez; UNESP; Fernandes, João Batista Kochenborger; UNESP; Boscolo, Camila Nomura; UNESP; Castillo, Julian David Alvarado; UNESP; Koberstein, Teresa Cristina Ribeiro Dias; UNESP.

Four different wreckfish (Polyprion americanus) broodstock batches were maintained in research facilities under different photo and thermo-period conditions, one in Greece, the Helenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR, n = 3) and three in Spain: Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO, n = 13) in Vigo, Aquarium Finisterrae (MC2, n = 21) in A Coruña and Consellería do Mar (CMRM, n = 11). The CMRM includes two centers that work together: Instituto Galego de Formación en Acuicultura (IGAFA) and Centro de Investigacións Mariñas (CIMA), both in Pontevedra. During the five years of the project DIVERSIFY (Exploring the biological and socio-economic potential of new-emerging candidate fish species for the expansion of the European aquaculture industry, 2013–2018)...
